The Kalahari and Makgadikgadi

The Kalahari Desert and the Makgadikgadi Pans offer a unique safari and wildlife experience.

This vast and ancient expanse (formerly riverbeds and lakes), which covers much of Botswana, comprises 2 separate National Parks, both of which are captivating destinations that offer a safari experience in a seemingly inhospitable habitat. But don't be fooled, as these lands host vast herds of Zebra, Wildebeests and Elephants which, naturally, draw the large and small predators to them. The experience is vastly different to the wetter Chobe and Okavango areas, but immensely rewarding due to the very different interactions animals have in this arid environment. The landscape is home to a surprisingly diverse array of wildlife, including desert-adapted species such as lions, cheetahs, hyenas, gemsbok and springbok, while the birdlife is as spectacular as the animals and insects on the ground, and equally adapted to this unique habitat.

These desert areas are also home to the San people, one of the oldest cultures on Earth and native to this region of Africa. With a deep understanding of the environment and a rich heritage of storytelling and traditional arts, the San offer visitors a unique opportunity to connect with the land and its people.
