Lazy Lagoon Island Lodge

Lazy Lagoon Island Lodge

Swahili Coast (north of Dar)

Escape the hustle and bustle for a serene retreat on Lazy Lagoon, a private island 2km off the Swahili Coast, where you'll find 9 kilometres of uninterrupted beach and the freedom to swim at any tide. Picture a secluded sand spit, protected by its own coral reef, inaccessible other than by boat, thus maintaining its exclusivity to its guests. The island has an interesting ecosystem, with many small mammals present such as bushbabies, Suni antelope, bush pigs and many bird and butterfly species, while the reef is is teeming with exotic fish. This is the perfect end or beginning of any action-packed safari.

Lazy Lagoon embraces local materials and traditional Swahili architecture and the lobby, restaurant and bedroom structures called 'bandas, which feature high steep roofs designed to catch the refreshing sea breezes, ensuring you stay comfortable in the warmth of East Africa. If lounging on the beach or in the Swahili daybeds isn't your preference, there's a host of activities to engage in - from snorkelling, kayaking, paddle boarding and a games room to historical excursions to Bagamoyo or a sun-soaked dhow voyages.

Lazy Lagoon offers 11 beach bandas, each with an en-suite bathroom, and the choice of twin or double beds. Additionally, there's an upper-level 'loft' with two twin beds, perfect for older kids. These roomy bandas come with both an upstairs balcony and a porch, providing unhindered sea views and direct access to the beach.

Lazy Lagoon is an excellent beach stop after an active safari on the Southern Circuit. See our Safaris for more information.

How our Tent Ratings work

These are based on our personal experience of the hotel, camp or lodge and should not be compared against ratings you find elsewhere. We intend to guide you and don’t be put off by a low tent rating as some of our favourites fall into the 2 and 3-tent categories.

It is also important to bear in mind that standards vary from country to country and a 4-tent hotel in South Africa cannot be compared with a 4-tent hotel in another part of the world.

To summarise our grading system, we have considered the following.

High in both quality and luxury of experience, and property must have ‘wowed’ us on many levels.

This is our benchmark for excellent service and experience, location and /or activities.

Good relative value, excellent location and/or experience, and offering an ideal base for exploring the area.

Budget-focused stopover property, sometimes it’s the ideal location on a driving itinerary.

Don’t be put off, these stays are comfortable and a perfect pit stop on a journey where the choices may be limited.
